This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa. It raised over $60 Million, which was distributed to Ethiopia, Sudan, and other impoverished countries.

Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie wrote this. It was produced by Quincy Jones.

After Belafonte and Ritchie, Stevie Wonder was the first star to agree to the project. From there, word got out and many members of the music industry signed on to help.

O cantor Harry Belafonte teve a idéia de criar uma versão americana do projeto Band Aid realizado na Inglaterra, chamado USA for Africa, para ajudar a acabar com a fome na Etiópia. Belafonte telefonou para Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson e Quincy Jones e falou sobre a idéia. Richie e Jackson esceveram "We Are the World" em duas horas.

Em 28 de janeiro de 1985, 45 artistas, incluindo Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper e Bob Dylan se reuniram nos estúdios da A&M Recording para gravar "We Are the World", com produção de Quincy Jones. A gravação foi marcada para depois da apresentação do American Music Awards, garantindo a disponibilidade dos artistas. A base musical foi gravada previamente e na noite do encontro, o estúdio tinha pedaços de fitas no chão, definindo a posição de cada artista, agrupados em torno de seis microfones.

 Em 23 de março de 1985, "We Are the World" entrou na parada Billboard Hot 100 em 21º lugar, conseguindo o primeiro lugar da parada em 13 de abril, vendendo de imediato mais de 800 mil cópias. Permanceu em primeiro lugar por 4 semanas. No dia 5 de abril de 1985 a música tocou simultaneamente em 5 mil emissoras de rádio americanas. Vendeu 7,5 milhões de cópias e arrecadou 50 milhões de dólares para amenizar a fome.

"We Are the World" ganhou o Grammy de melhor música e melhor gravação do ano de 1985.

Foi uma das músicas que mais tocaram nas rádios do Brasil e do mundo em todos os tempos.
