MANY x MUCH

"Much" e "Many" são usados para relatar quantidades.

"Much" => É usado com substantivos incontáveis.

Ex: They don't have much food. (Eles não têm muita comida.)

"Many" => É usado com substantivos contáveis.

Ex: There are many movie theaters in town. (Há muitos cinemas na cidade.)

Nós temos também "A lot of" que é usado no singular/plural, com substantivos contáveis ou incontáveis, portanto “a loto of” pode substituir tanto "much" quanto "many".

Ex: They don't have much patience.
They don't have a lot of patience.

There are many people in São Paulo.
There are a lot of people in São Paulo.

Algumas Regras importantes:

1. “Much”  acompanha substantivos que se apresentam sempre no singular.

Esses substantivos são chamados, em inglês, uncoutable nouns e podem ser:

(a) substantivos abstratos
much patience / much time/ much trouble

(b) substantivos que se referem a substâncias
much bread / much wine / much money

2. “Many” acompanha substantivos quando usados no plural, countable nouns:

Many friends/ many books/ many dollars

3. Much e many são usados, de preferência, em frases negativas e interrogativas.

Em frases afirmativas usa-se, geralmente, “a lot of” que se traduz por muito, muitos, uma porção de.

A lot of  pode, também, ser usado em frases interrogativas.

Interrogative sentences:

Does he have much problem?
Does he have a lot of Problem?

Does she save many dollars?
Does she save a lot of dollars?

Negative sentences:

He doesn’t have much problem.
He doesn’t have a lot of Problem.

She doesn’t save many dollars.
She doesn’t save a lot of dollars.

“A lot of” se apresenta sem a preposição “of” quando se refere a um substantivo já mencionado.
=>           Do you have many books about that?
                Yes, a lot.
